The Top 20

Welcome back to my countdown of my favorite albums of 2020! If you’re invested or interested enough to come back for a second installment, I thank you. We all know what you’re here for, so allow me to keep the introduction brief. If you haven’t yet seen Part 1, I retain the right to refer back to it at any time, so feel free to check it out below. The whole purpose of this list is to give you recommendations for albums you may enjoy, so feel free to peruse the rest of the selection.

And of…

Honorable Mentions and #50–21

As we reach the end of another year, and take stock of everything that’s happened over the course of another somewhat arbitrary rotation around the sun, I’m sure most of us find ourselves in a rather different headspace than we have in years past. I won’t go into any detail about the trials we’ve all faced over the course of 2020; you don’t need to be reminded. That said, a very unique and challenging year led to a rather unique and challenging crop of musical releases, and as I have done every year for nearly a…

The Top 20

As promised I have returned, and I’m ready to finish off my list of my favorite albums of 2019. I reserve the right to refer back to the first part of this piece at will, so if you missed Part 1, feel free to take a gander at it right here:

If you still haven’t checked out Merry-Go-Round Magazine, a very cool culture publication for which I write music reviews, then you definitely should do so! …

Honorable Mentions and #50–21

Well, here we are. We’ve made it to Year 8 of this annual writing project of mine, and you’d better believe I’m not stopping now. Another year gone, another year of listening to as much new music as I could conceivably get my hands (ears?) on, and another year of trying to bring the best of it back to you. At the much-ballyhooed turn of the decade, its been a year of both reflection and looking into the future, taking stock of what we heard in the 2010’s but with our eyes and ears set on the 2020’s. I think…

Nothing but love for the OG Planet of the Apes

It’s time for Part 2 of my Albums of The Year 2018 roundup, and this one’s the main event. I reserve the right to reference Part 1 without explanation, so if you haven’t read Part 1 yet, please do so before proceeding. Click here:

You all know the drill. As I try to emphasize every year, I try to make this list a measure of objective quality and critical analysis, but no one person’s evaluations will ever be perfect in music. This is just my own opinion, and my own personal preferences and biases cannot help but be included in…

Honorable Mentions and #50–21

Don’t question Charlton Heston

It’s finally time! My seventh annual Albums of the Year roundup is here. 2018 has been, in my opinion, far and away the best year of the entire decade for music, and I’m extremely excited to talk about the myriad of awesome releases that made this long and at times arduous year bearable and occasionally even magical.

It’s been a banner year for the genres of punk and metal, the best years in my estimation for those particular genres since the 1990’s. The contemporary rock music scene graced us with a series of albums that push the genre into new…

Fragile by Yes

A game has been circulating around Facebook, one in which somebody writes about 10 of their favorite albums in 10 days, and nominates other people to do it as well. Thanks to Mr. Aaron Perles of the beautiful city of New Orleans, I myself was nominated to take part in this little game/challenge, and after a good deal of stalling and procrastinating, I’m going to bite the bullet and do it. There’s nothing I love more than an excuse to write about music. …

The Top Ten

Welcome to part 3 of 3: The Finale. The Big One. The Top Ten Albums of 2017. If you haven’t read Parts 1 or 2 yet, I’ll link both of them below, and you should definitely check those out and give them a pass before you go through here, as I very likely will refer back to them at times, and I wouldn’t want anyone to not know what I’m talking about.

In the cover image of this piece, you will see 5 artists. MC Ride (of Death Grips), Ezra Koenig (of Vampire Weekend), Killer Mike and El-P (Run The…

The Top 20 Begins: #20–11

Archy Marshall, aka King Krule

Welcome to Part 2 of 3 of my 2017 Albums of the Year write-up, in which I go back and revisit all of my favorite albums of the year, rank them, and tell you why I think you should check them out. If you haven’t read Part 1 yet, you definitely should do that, at the link right here:

Now, with that out of the way, and with the EP’s and honorable mentions taken care of, it’s time to get into the meat and potatoes of this annual project: The List. This year I’ve chosen to count down my Top…
